The wall mural of Guðsteins Eyjólfsson’s store on Laugavegur will be covered up due to maintenance. The manager of the AFF Concept Store, which moved into the building, assures that every effort has been made to restore the wall to its original state.

The mural, once a symbol of Guðsteins Eyjólfsson’s store, created quite a stir among locals and passersby in downtown Reykjavik when it was announced that it would be painted over. The mural has been a landmark for years, but routine building maintenance requires it to be covered up. Guðsteins Eyjólfsson’s store moved out of the downtown area in March after being a constant presence on Laugavegur since 1929.

Sigríður Jónsdóttir, owner of the AFF Concept Store, said the mural’s removal is part of the building’s maintenance plan. “We just need to paint the wall and make it beautiful. But we have taken all measures so that it can be restored to its original form,” she said. The mural will be reinstalled after the maintenance work is finished.
