Several areas in southwestern Norway have experienced heavy rainfall and flooding due to a storm named Jakob that moved in on Thursday. The intense showers are attributed to an “atmospheric river” forming over the Norwegian coast, which is now advancing toward Sweden.

According to meteorologist Marcus Sjöstedt, the atmospheric river is linked to the weather systems currently affecting Scandinavia, resulting in increasing winds and multiple weather warnings issued for Sweden.

Sjöstedt notes that the phenomenon is exacerbated by rising global temperatures. Increased evaporation from land and seas leads to intensified rainfall. “Once it starts to rain, it can lead to heavier downpours,” he explains.

This situation highlights the challenges posed by climate change, making such weather events more severe and frequent.
