Support for the spirituality of elderly individuals with dementia is often overlooked in caregiving, according to new doctoral research from the University of Turku. Kristiina Juudin, the researcher behind the study, clarifies that spirituality does not necessarily pertain to supernatural aspects but can encompass small, everyday experiences and moments.

The foundation for supporting spirituality lies in the individual’s unique needs. Juudin explains that spirituality can be reinforced through personal beliefs or religion, meaningful relationships, nature, or art. Having worked extensively with elderly individuals with dementia, she has observed how the significance of life can diminish as the disease progresses. The identity of the affected person often becomes fragmented when their memory fails to recall who they are and what matters in their lives.

The study highlights key elements of spirituality related to well-being, such as love, acceptance of others, respect, and empathy. Spirituality is a significant part of holistic well-being; for many, spiritual experiences provide purpose in life, including those with dementia. Juudin’s research aimed to understand how supporting spirituality impacts individuals with dementia and how it can be integrated within their care environments.

Importantly, Juudin notes that supporting spirituality in caregiving does not necessarily equate to adding more resources. Instead, it involves caregivers connecting with their own spirituality and sharing it, as well as adopting a respectful attitude toward patients, recognizing them as equally valuable people, even if they cannot articulate themselves. This connection brings new depth to caregiving, fostering meaningful interactions for both patients and caregivers. According to her experience, many care facilities successfully facilitate such connections, emphasizing the importance of mindfulness in everyday interactions.
