Verdict due today in trial of Mohamad Kourani, accused of assault and crimes against the government in Iceland

The verdict in the trial of Mohamad Kourani will be announced today at the Reykjanes District Court. Kourani is accused of stabbing a man in March, among other charges.

Kourani is on trial for assault and crimes against the government. The prosecution is based on six counts. Among other things, Kourani is accused of stabbing a man in the face at the OK Market in Reykjavik in March. He is also accused of injuring another man in the store who tried to assist the victim.

Four of the prosecution’s charges relate to crimes against the government. Kourani is accused of spitting on a prison guard and spraying an unknown liquid on another person in June last year. He is also accused of threatening a police officer and his family with death, the day after the stabbing. On the same day, he is said to have spat in the face of a police officer at the Reykjavik District Court. The district prosecutor has recommended that he be sentenced to six to eight years in prison.

Kourani is originally from Syria and was granted international protection in Iceland in 2018. According to the verdict of the Reykjanes District Court, between 2017 and 2021, the police handled nearly a hundred cases in which he was suspected of criminal behavior. He has been convicted of numerous crimes, including bodily assault, burglary, violation of restraining orders, document forgery, weapon offenses, and crimes against the government.
