Jóhan Poulsen, a specialist in urology, reports that approximately 50 men in the Faroe Islands undergo sterilization procedures each year. The primary reason for this is that these men have typically already had the children they desired. Additionally, many choose to take responsibility for contraception.

As a urologist, Poulsen encounters various myths surrounding sterilization, particularly concerns related to potency and hormones. He clarifies, “Sterilization has no effect on sexual ability. On the contrary, it alleviates the stress of worrying about an unexpected pregnancy, which provides a sense of security.”

The procedure itself is quite straightforward, taking only about 20 minutes, and is associated with very few complications. However, he warns that once a man is sterilized, reversing the procedure can be complicated and not always successful.

“Sterilization is the safest form of contraception available,” Poulsen emphasizes.
