Anyone can find themselves in a situation where first aid skills are beneficial. Annually, around 100,000 Finns complete first aid training certified by the Finnish Red Cross (SPR). Minna Sihvo, an expert in first aid and health operations at SPR, emphasizes that these skills are vital for all citizens. “Everyone should practice them so they know how to act in an emergency,” Sihvo states.

Sihvo believes many people live in a sense of security, underestimating the likelihood of experiencing unfortunate incidents. However, health crises and various accidents happen frequently, and no one can be sure when they might face one themselves. Currently preparing a doctoral thesis at the University of Jyväskylä, Sihvo’s research focuses on learning first aid skills and the role of emotions in emergency situations. She notes that while Finns are generally willing to help and call emergency services when needed, the real challenge lies in whether they feel empowered to actually step in and assist.

A first aid skills quiz based on SPR’s materials tests knowledge on handling various emergencies. For instance, it asks how to treat a burn from boiling water or what to do if someone is unconscious and unresponsive. The quiz also evaluates awareness of symptoms indicating a stroke, correct responses to choking incidents, and critical numbers to remember during CPR. Additionally, it includes practical advice for assisting a person having a seizure.

For detailed instructions on proper adult resuscitation techniques, viewers can refer to a related video featuring Dr. Miska Laakso, published in February 2018.
