A man in his seventies has been charged in connection with a woman’s death in Akureyri, Iceland, last April. The suspect, who has been held in custody since April 22nd, is expected to have his detention extended.

The man was taken into custody on suspicion of causing injuries to the woman that led to her death. However, the specific details of the charges laid against him have not been disclosed as he has not been served with a copy of the indictment.

The decision to extend the man’s detention until August 9th is pending a judge’s approval. It is unclear when the case will go to court.

The backstory to the case dates back to the early morning of April 22nd, when police were called to a house in Akureyri at around 4:30 am. The first officers on the scene found an unconscious woman in the apartment and immediately began resuscitation attempts.

The suspect and the deceased were living together in an apartment in the Naustahverfi neighborhood in Akureyri. They had recently moved there with their son. Neighbors reported no disturbance on the night the woman was found but noted that the police had previously been involved with the residents of the house.
