Finland braces for heavy rainfall and thunderstorms, while Lapland may experience heatwave, warns meteorological institute
The week has started with heavy rainfall in Finland. The central part of the country is experiencing the most rain, with Parikkala receiving over 18mm and Ylivieska receiving 16mm. The west will also see rain and thunderstorms in the afternoon. The south is relatively dry, but some western showers may reach the southwest. Temperatures are around 20 degrees Celsius, dropping to 15-17 during showers.
In Lapland, it’s warm and sunny. The heatwave threshold, which is at least 25.1 degrees, will likely be exceeded on Monday. Rainfall will disperse on Tuesday, with scattered showers expected. The overall picture is dry, with the rainiest region likely being Kainuu. Temperatures will exceed 20 degrees if it doesn’t rain, but will drop to around 15 in the rain. The heatwave threshold may be exceeded in Northern Lapland and the southeast.
Warnings of heavy thunderstorms and rain have been issued for the early part of the week. The Finnish Meteorological Institute issued a severe thunderstorm warning for several provinces on the west coast, as well as Pirkanmaa and Central Finland on Monday. Southern Finland is widely marked as yellow on the warning map due to severe thunderstorm warnings on Tuesday. Rainfall and severe thunderstorm warnings have been issued for several provinces in southern and western Finland on Wednesday.
