Court orders psychiatric evaluation for suspect in violent crime case in Jyväskylä
On Wednesday, the Central Finland District Court issued an interim ruling concerning a serious violent crime that occurred in Jyväskylä during the summer. The court has ordered a psychiatric evaluation for a young man accused in the case.
The incident took place in July within an outdoor area between the neighborhoods of Jyskä and Halssila. The accused allegedly attacked a young woman on a running path and raped her. Both the suspect and the victim were unknown to each other. According to police reports, the man used a sharp weapon and inflicted severe violence upon the victim. During the preliminary investigation, the man admitted to using a sharp weapon but denied the other alleged actions.
Initially, the police investigated the incident as an attempted murder; however, the charge escalated to attempted murder during the prosecution phase. Regional prosecutor Marika Visakorpi-Kemppainen indicated that the case warranted careful judicial consideration due to the act’s calculated nature, brutality, and cruelty. She also pointed out parallels between this case and the murder of a young girl that occurred in Valkeakoski, as both involved attacks by unknown individuals in public places.
The court proceedings began on Tuesday in closed sessions. A final ruling will be delivered after the completion of the psychiatric evaluation.
