Copenhagen officially inaugurates Niels Bohr Building after years of delays and budget overruns

In 2013, Denmark claimed victory in the Eurovision Song Contest with “Only Teardrops,” Uffe Elbæk founded the Alternative political party, and the Danish Building Agency announced plans for the Niels Bohr Building in Jagtvej, Copenhagen. Today marks a significant milestone for the university as it officially inaugurates the long-awaited structure, as stated by Søren Munk Skydsgaard, the university director of the University of Copenhagen.

Originally projected to cost 1.6 billion kroner, the building’s expenses ballooned to over five billion kroner, with an expected completion date of 2016 that was not met. It finally opens today, eight years later, despite facing numerous delays and budget overruns. King Frederik will be present for the inauguration and is scheduled to tour selected research facilities. However, he is unlikely to visit the chemical department, which still lacks essential ventilation system assessments crucial for handling flammable and toxic materials.

According to Peter Waaben Thulstrup, a lecturer and union representative at the Department of Chemistry, the absence of proper ventilation restricts work with many substances critical for their research. Studies are ongoing to validate the building’s safety for these materials, with hopes that the chemical staff can move in by 2025.

The prolonged delays have impacted both the university’s finances and researchers’ access to state-of-the-art facilities. Despite these challenges, Skydsgaard emphasizes today’s joyful occasion. He urges a focus on future possibilities as the university turns a page and begins utilizing the building. The official inauguration by King Frederik is set for 3:00 PM today.
