Thirteen amendments proposed for unemployment insurance law in Faroe Islands
Thirteen amendments are set to be made to the unemployment insurance law (ALS) in the Faroe Islands, along with additional smaller changes.
The management of ALS has conducted a comprehensive assessment of the law and has recommended these amendments, which are outlined in a proposal from the Ministry of the Environment. The aim is to tailor the law more effectively to the current conditions of the labor market.
One significant change includes the elimination of waiting days for unemployment benefits. Due to the strong financial position of ALS, it is proposed to adjust certain regulations to be more accommodating for the unemployed. This includes shortening the waiting periods and extending the rules for taking leave while receiving unemployment support.
Furthermore, individuals receiving the lowest or average early retirement pensions, as well as those in adjusted employment, may be exempt from paying ALS contributions upon application.
Looking ahead, the financial outlook for ALS in 2024 is promising, with expected revenues of 190 million DKK and expenditures of 58 million DKK. The anticipated results for that year will range between 160 to 180 million DKK, with the assets projected to reach nearly half a billion DKK, according to the legislative proposal currently under consultation.
