Eggertsson surprised by leaked messages from Frostadóttir ahead of Icelandic parliamentary elections

In the lead-up to the Icelandic parliamentary elections scheduled for November 30, former Reykjavik mayor Dagur B. Eggertsson expressed surprise at private messages sent by party leader Kristrún Frostadóttir to a dissatisfied voter. He acknowledged that he did not demand a ministerial position for the upcoming elections.

During an interview, Eggertsson stated that he was taken aback by the personal nature of the leaked messages, where Frostadóttir suggested the voter support the Social Democratic Alliance while crossing out Eggertsson’s name if they were unhappy with him. She characterized him as a “spare part” in the party’s plans, stating he would not become a minister.

“I must admit I was a bit shocked when I saw this. It changed the context for me knowing these messages were personal and then got leaked,” he said. However, he emphasized that he and Frostadóttir met recently to discuss the issue and had an honest conversation, concluding that it was important to move past this.

They both agreed that the messages were inappropriate. When asked if Frostadóttir apologized, Eggertsson replied, “Yes, you could say that. We agreed this was not appropriate. I have certainly sensed that this has upset more people than just myself and appreciate the tremendous support I’ve received.”

He clarified that he never sought a ministerial post or a party leadership role, but is running for parliament because of the elections’ significance. Known for fostering unity and cooperation, Eggertsson stated he finds it easy to move beyond issues when there is sincerity and trust.
