The Volunteer House in Hønefoss was established following the extreme weather event “Hans,” which heightened the focus on emergency preparedness. Currently, 58 organizations, including Norwegian People’s Aid, the Red Cross, and veterans’ associations, operate under its roof.

Justice and Emergency Preparedness Minister Emilie Enger Mehl recently visited Hønefoss as part of the Self-Preparedness Week. She emphasized the increasing importance of having emergency plans in every home. “If everyone can prepare a little for crises at home, it significantly contributes to Norway’s overall defense,” she stated.

During her visit, Mehl received training on crisis response, including fire extinguishing techniques. She recommended that households maintain supplies of water, food, and warmth for at least a week. All households will soon receive a brochure containing updated advice on self-preparedness, which now includes guidance on media literacy to combat misinformation.

Highlighted by Mehl, the ongoing conflict in Europe following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine presents heightened threats to Norway, making it essential for citizens to prepare for potential power outages or isolation due to emergencies.

Coordinator Reni Odden explained that there was a substantial need for cleanup efforts after “Hans.” Multi-organizational cleanup actions were organized, fostering community collaboration. Odden noted that, during future crises, the Volunteer House will serve as a hub for information and support from its resident organizations, addressing the community’s needs for timely information and assistance.

She advocates for every municipality to establish a Volunteer House, as the collaboration and resources shared among organizations provide invaluable support during emergencies.
