Aksel Hennie warns of unprecedented youth crime surge in Oslo
Aksel Hennie, known for his acclaimed film “Uno,” believes that the current environment of youth crime and gang violence in Oslo is unprecedented. The actor, who portrayed David in the film about an organized crime culture among bodybuilders in the city, emphasizes the alarming changes he witnesses today.
Reflecting on his own past when he faced legal issues related to graffiti, Hennie raises concerns about the increasing youth crime rates. He warns that without substantial intervention, young people are at risk of being lost to crime, drugs, and violence. Hennie insists that political leaders need to take firmer actions to address these challenges.
Recent statistics indicate a troubling rise in youth crime in Oslo, particularly among individuals under 15, where criminal activities have surged by 76%. Psychologist Harald Kanestrøm notes a rise in youth criminality, attributing it to a combination of individual traits and environmental factors, such as poor self-regulation, social exclusion, substance abuse, and problematic family dynamics.
Kanestrøm argues that solutions must be multifaceted, as focusing on single interventions like prisons or recreational facilities overlooks the complexity of the issues at hand.
In a recent visit to Ringerike Prison, Parliament President Masud Gharahkhani echoed Hennie’s sentiments, stressing the need for stronger police forces to combat crime, especially targeting leadership within criminal gangs. He underscored the importance of improving community support for children to divert them from criminal influences, stressing a collaborative approach involving various societal systems. Gharahkhani concluded that while the situation appears to be worsening, he believes it is essential to intensify efforts to reverse this trend.
