One person sustained serious injuries at the Martinlaakso power plant in Vantaa today, Monday. The accident occurred around 2:30 PM. According to on-duty fire chief Arto Pirinen, the injured individual was an employee of a subcontractor dismantling a heavy oil tank at the facility. Emergency services took the person to the hospital, but no further updates on their condition are currently available.

The incident happened when a wall of the tank, which was in the process of being dismantled, collapsed onto the worker, who was inside the tank at the time. Although Pirinen couldn’t specify the height of the tank before the dismantling began, he noted that such tanks are typically around 10 meters tall and six meters wide.

Another worker present at the scene did not get caught under the collapse and immediately began assisting the trapped individual. In total, five emergency units responded to the incident. Pirinen mentioned that the rescue operation was challenging and that he had never encountered a similar situation throughout his career. The rescue team required skills in rope work, as they had to enter the tank from the inside. Additionally, a cherry picker was utilized to assist in the operation.
