New information has emerged regarding the fatal electric scooter accident that occurred in Espoo, Finland, in August. A man died on August 15, when a 16-year-old scooter rider collided with him at high speed on a pedestrian crossing in Leppävaara. Police now suspect that the young rider intentionally collided with another man on the sidewalk shortly before this deadly incident.
Investigator and Commissioner Hannu Kontola informed Yle that the earlier crash took place approximately 15 to 30 minutes before the fatal accident. According to Kontola, a middle-aged man sustained injuries when he was struck by the scooter rider on the sidewalk. The police reported that the suspect was riding on the sidewalk at a high speed. The injured man required hospitalization for examination but was discharged shortly after.
In light of this new information, a charge of assault has been added to the ongoing investigation, which was previously focused on severe traffic safety violations, manslaughter, and hit-and-run. Kontola stated that a separate investigation might be launched regarding the new assault claims. He emphasized that there is currently no evidence linking the two incidents directly.
The younger scooter rider left the scene of the fatal collision almost immediately but later reported to the police and acknowledged his involvement. However, he denies the charges being investigated against him.
According to Kontola, the suspect was using his own electric scooter, which has not been located for further examination. He mentioned that commercially available scooters can reach speeds of 60 to 70 kilometers per hour but does not believe the speed was that high during the crash. The suspect is currently free, and the police investigation is nearing completion, with the case expected to transition to the prosecutor within the next couple of weeks.
