Christmas soda, known as julebrus, is a beloved beverage in Norway, with sales kicking off as early as October. Norgesgruppen, a leading grocery chain, typically sells about one million liters of julebrus in October alone, and around seven million liters by the end of the Christmas season. Other retailers like Coop and Rema 1000 also report high sales during this month.

Julebrus, part of Norway’s Christmas tradition, comes in various regional varieties, drawing a mix of enthusiasm and skepticism from consumers. While some are delighted to see it in stores as the weather turns colder, others argue that its arrival is premature, suggesting a wait until November.

Kine Søyland, a communication manager at Norgesgruppen, highlights the cultural significance of julebrus, noting that many customers eagerly inquire about its availability as October begins. She believes its strong local connections contribute to its popularity.

Sales figures support this trend; Rema 1000 reported selling nearly one million liters in October 2023, and Coop’s Extra store saw more than 400,000 liters sold in the same month last year. Popular varieties include Grans sugar-free julebrus and local favorites from Hamar and Lillehammer.

While some consumers enjoy the festive buzz early, others voice concerns about starting Christmas preparations too soon. Nonetheless, as long as demand remains strong, julebrus will continue to appear on store shelves well ahead of the holiday season, sparking discussions among shoppers about the timing of Christmas products.
