Two individuals rescued after fishing boat runs aground in Súgandafjörður fjord, Iceland

Two individuals were successfully rescued this morning after their fishing boat ran aground in the Súgandafjörður fjord. Rescue operations were launched by the Icelandic Coast Guard and local lifeboat crews.

The incident was reported shortly after 6 AM when the captain of the fishing boat contacted the Coast Guard. Three rescue vessels, including the Stella from Flateyri, the Kobbi Láki from Bolungarvík, and the Gísli Jóns from Ísafjörður, were dispatched to the scene. Additionally, the Björg rescue team from Suðureyri sent personnel overland and deployed a rescue boat.

Upon arrival, the rescue teams assisted the two individuals on the fishing boat and helped them safely reach shore. They were subsequently airlifted by a Coast Guard helicopter to Suðureyri.

The fishing boat remains stranded and efforts to recover it will take place during the evening high tide, assisted by the rescue vessels from the Coast Guard. A spokesperson from the Coast Guard indicated that salvage operations are expected to start around 3 PM and plan to have the boat afloat again by approximately 6 PM.

The Westfjords Police and the Transportation Safety Investigation Board are currently investigating the grounding of the boat.
