The North Karelian District Court has acquitted a man accused of murdering his friend. The verdict was reached by a panel of three judges, with the majority deciding to dismiss the charges, while a minority argued that the defendant should be held responsible.

The 71-year-old victim was allegedly killed at his summer cottage in Kesälahti, Finland, two years ago. Prosecutors claimed that the defendant concealed the body in the surrounding area.

The court’s disagreement centered on whether the defendant could be proven to have committed intentional homicide. It was established that both the victim, a man from Imatra, and the defendant were at the summer cottage during September and October of 2021, and that the victim died during this time. The court concluded that the defendant must have been aware of his friend’s death and may have even moved the body. However, the cause of death could not be determined, as body parts were discovered near the cottage in the fall of 2023, as well as earlier this spring.

Ultimately, the majority found that the evidence presented did not sufficiently prove that the defendant intentionally killed the victim, nor could alternative sequences of events be definitively ruled out. Following the dismissal of charges, the defendant, who had been in custody, was ordered to be released immediately.
