Traditionally, au pairs travel abroad. However, Paula Kekkonen from Hollola opted for a different adventure, heading north to the Sámi region. She learned from a friend about a Sámi family in Kaamasmukka, Utsjoki municipality, that needed assistance during the reindeer separation season. The family’s mother had announced on social media her search for an au pair. Heading to the Sámi region felt almost like going abroad, as the family lives according to Sámi culture, earning a livelihood through traditional reindeer herding, with Northern Sámi as their home language—topics Paula was largely unfamiliar with.

Reflecting on her decision, Kekkonen noted, “When I was younger, I would have loved to go south; now, it’s really nice to head to Sámi Land.” For the family, the reindeer herding season brings challenges, especially for Laura Niittyvuopio-Valle, a mother of two small children, who balances her work and family obligations during this hectic time.

This is their second autumn with an au pair. “It’s the only way I can manage and participate properly in reindeer herding work,” Niittyvuopio-Valle stated.

Paula Kekkonen supports the family by picking up the children from daycare and ensuring they have meals during the busy separation time. Both Kekkonen and Niittyvuopio-Valle praise each other for their effective collaboration and the warm welcome Kekkonen received from the children. They believe that this arrangement could benefit other families as well.

Initially, the plan was for Kekkonen to stay only during the separation season, but she has enjoyed her time so much that she is open to staying longer. “I’ve enjoyed every moment, always learning something new and discovering different places. I highly recommend it,” she said.
