Tensions rise within Social Democratic Alliance over remarks about Dag B. Eggertsson in Reykjavík
Comments made by the chair of the Social Democratic Alliance regarding Dag B. Eggertsson are said to heighten internal tensions within the party, according to a political scientist. The remarks about one of the most influential politicians in the party’s history being seen as a mere supporting actor may not sit well with many.
Kristrún Frostadóttir, the chair of the Social Democratic Alliance, expressed dissatisfaction through private messages that circulated yesterday, encouraging a disgruntled voter to support the party while crossing out Dag’s name on the ballot if he disagrees with him. She added that Dag does not claim a ministerial position but implied he could be beneficial to the parliamentary group.
The implications of this situation for the party’s support are yet to be seen, but some members perceive a hint of disrespect towards Dag, who has significantly contributed to the party’s success in the capital city, where he has garnered support beyond what the alliance has achieved nationally for some time.
Eiríkur Bergmann Einarsson, a political scientist, noted that it is challenging to maintain cohesion in a broad coalition, especially with fresh members who have recently joined the party. The Social Democratic Alliance has been the largest political party in the country according to polls over the past year and a half, although it has seen a decline in recent weeks, now measuring at 24 percent in the latest surveys. Whether this decline will continue remains to be seen, but it has become a possible scenario as the party attempts to hold onto a diverse base.
