In preparation for the 2024 parliamentary elections, the Social Democratic Party (Samfylkingin) has finalized its candidate lists across all constituencies. Party leader Kristrún Frostadóttir emphasized that the aim is to create a lineup that truly reflects Icelandic society and showcases the party’s diversity.

“First and foremost, we want to display our broad representation. We have focused on building consensus for change across the country, cutting across class and social status,” Frostadóttir stated after the lists were approved.

The candidate selection process faced challenges due to the short notice of the upcoming elections. In some constituencies, there were calls for primaries, but time constraints did not allow such arrangements. Nevertheless, Frostadóttir noted a strong interest among potential candidates, asserting that they managed to find the right individuals for the right positions. Those who were not selected still expressed willingness to contribute in alternative ways, reinforcing the unity of the party.

The candidate listings include an equal number of men and women, with three candidates being newcomers to parliament. Frostadóttir explained the party’s campaign strategy, highlighting initiatives related to health care, employment, infrastructure, and housing. She mentioned plans for a new initiative focusing on housing and economic issues, emphasizing the necessity for new and functional systems that benefit the average citizen. The party’s commitment is clear: they intend to invigorate the political process rather than merely perpetuate the status quo.
