A rare testamentary donation in Joensuu has enhanced access to nature for people with mobility restrictions. With a targeted donation of approximately €75,600 from a private individual, the city acquired specialized outdoor equipment, including off-road wheelchairs and sleds for skiing and skating. These resources have been made available for use this year, enabling individuals with mobility impairments to navigate forest trails inaccessible to standard wheelchairs.

Before this donation, the city’s sports services had no functional outdoor equipment available. Experts in the field note that such substantial contributions are uncommon, with Susanna Tero from the Federation of Intellectual Disabilities highlighting Joensuu as a pioneer city in making significant investments in multiple mobility aids at once.

While individuals in need can apply for recreational equipment under disability services laws, approvals are often denied due to limited funding. The cost of specialized equipment can also be prohibitive, with items like skiing and skating sleds costing thousands of euros compared to regular skates or skis, which are much cheaper. Without access to necessary equipment, children with mobility challenges may face social isolation.

Availability of such aids varies greatly between municipalities. Cities like Turku and Oulu have lent a wide range of equipment for years, while Kuopio only offers a skiing sled.

The use of these aids promotes equality and inclusion for both children and adults with disabilities, encouraging participation in outdoor activities. Joensuu’s city administration is lending out the equipment for free at least until the end of the year, aiming to ensure everyone can enjoy nature regardless of their mobility challenges.
