School shooting in Viertola, Vantaa, underscores need for secure firearm storage in Finland

A recent school shooting in Viertola, Vantaa, has highlighted the critical importance of secure firearm storage. In early April, a 12-year-old boy shot his classmates, resulting in one death and two injuries. The boy is suspected of murder and attempted murder, but the case will not proceed to prosecution due to his young age.

According to preliminary investigations, the boy took a firearm from a relative without their knowledge. He had seen where his relative kept the cabinet key, weapon, and ammunition, and had also practiced shooting under supervision. Firearms expert Kari Laurila stressed that gun owners must ensure that only they have access to their weapons and should avoid leaving cabinet keys in easily accessible locations. He suggests that a numerical combination lock is often more secure than a key.

The police are investigating the relative for firearms storage violations. During the preliminary investigation, the relative confirmed having several legally owned firearms in his home, and he admitted that he had entrusted the boy, failing to foresee the possibility of weapon theft.

Research shows that in international instances of school shootings by minors, it is common for the perpetrator to use someone else’s legally owned firearm. Laurila points out that a firearm owner makes a mistake if someone else can access their weapon. He recommends using trigger locks to prevent misuse if a firearm falls into the wrong hands.

Laurila also believes that introducing children to shooting sports in a controlled environment is beneficial. He notes that understanding proper firearm handling is essential and that shooting sports can enhance concentration and accuracy.
