A ship named after renowned author Hrafn Jökulsson was inaugurated yesterday in Siglufjörður, Iceland. Known for his extensive involvement in beach clean-up across the country, Jökulsson dedicated the last years of his life to collecting waste and cleaning the Kolgrafavík area in Árneshreppur. His efforts were supported by the environmental organization, Veraldarvinir.

The new ship will be used by Veraldarvinir to enhance their beach clean-up operations. Þórarinn Ívarsson, founder of Veraldarvinir, praised Jökulsson during the inauguration ceremony. He described Jökulsson as a man who was driven, motivated others to do good, and made significant contributions during his lifetime.

Many members of Jökulsson’s family gathered in Siglufjörður to attend the ceremony. His sister, Elísabet, commissioned a sea prayer for the occasion from performance artist Snorri Ásmundsson.

The prayer, which was recited by Elísabet, called upon Poseidon, Hilarion, Njörður, and the land-spirits of Iceland to protect the ship during its voyages. It also asked for protection from natural forces during the ship’s clean-up activities for the benefit of the Earth and all of its inhabitants. The prayer paid homage to the Earth, nature, and water.
