Farmers in South Þingeyjarsýsla have taken steps towards sustainable grain cultivation by establishing a grain drying facility and storage near Húsavík this summer. According to the local agricultural association president, this new setup is a significant improvement for farmers in the region.

The drying facility is expected to save farmers considerable expenses and enhance the sustainability of food production, although it was not put to the test this year due to a poor grain harvest following a cold summer. The long-awaited dream of constructing the facility has finally materialized, providing an essential resource amid challenging weather conditions that hampered outdoor farming in the North this year.

The facility will allow for the drying of up to 1,000 tons of grain and the storage of 300 cubic meters on-site, although many farmers may continue to store grain at their farms. The president of the agricultural association noted that the additional infrastructure not only serves as winter storage but also acts as a buffer for the drying process, ensuring that operations can run smoothly without interruptions.

Before the construction of the drying facility and storage, farmers were hesitant to expand grain production, despite government encouragement. However, the new facility has instilled a renewed confidence among them. Similar setups have proven successful in other areas of the country, fostering optimism for increased agricultural productivity and sustainability in the region.
