Boy evacuated to Denmark from Syria faces separation from mother in custody battle

Knud Foldschack, the lawyer representing the eight-year-old boy, who was evacuated to Denmark yesterday from the al-Roj camp in Syria, has expressed dissatisfaction with the authorities’ response to the boy’s needs. Both the boy and his mother arrived at Copenhagen Airport last night, but the mother has since been placed in custody for four weeks, facing charges related to the promotion of the Islamic State terrorist organization.

Foldschack criticized the drastic separation of the boy from his mother, emphasizing the child’s need for parental support. He also pointed out the difficulties that this separation creates for engaging network persons who could assist in the case. He and the organization Repatriate the Children have visited the boy in the al-Roj camp ten times.

In a statement regarding the situation, Denmark’s Social and Housing Minister Sophie Hæstorp Andersen mentioned that there would be a need for special efforts upon the family’s arrival in Denmark. The child is currently under the care of a Danish municipality, which is responsible for ensuring he receives the necessary support and care.

Foldschack expressed concern over the lack of involvement from social services upon their return, which he believes is crucial for the boy’s well-being. He had hoped to be present at the airport to provide support both for the boy and his mother upon their arrival.

This situation raises questions about balancing legal proceedings against the mother with ensuring the child maintains a relationship with her, including visit opportunities, which Foldschack insists should be optimized. The Social and Housing Minister has refrained from commenting on these claims.
