Yesterday, an attempted assassination took place during one of former U.S. President Donald Trump’s political rallies in Butler, Pennsylvania. A gunshot grazed Trump’s right ear before he was rushed to safety by the secret service. National leaders and politicians worldwide have condemned the attack, stating that it poses a significant threat to democracy.

The U.S. Secret Service reported that multiple shots were fired towards the stage where Trump was delivering a speech. One person died, and two others were seriously injured in the attack. The suspected assailant, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, was shot dead by the secret service.

In his statement, U.S. President Joe Biden expressed gratitude that Trump survived the attack unharmed. He emphasized the need for unity amongst the American people and stressed that political violence is never acceptable. He also had a phone call with Trump, according to the White House.

Vice President Kamala Harris also denounced the attack, calling it “shameful”. She expressed her prayers for Trump and his family, as well as the victims of the attack. Similarly, leaders from both the Republican and Democratic parties in the Senate condemned the attack.

European leaders also voiced their concerns on social media. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed shock at the event, stating that political violence in any form is unacceptable in society. French President Emmanuel Macron shared the shock and anger of the American people, wishing Trump a swift recovery. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also expressed solidarity with Trump and called for a collective stance against violence.

J.D. Vance, who has been mentioned as a potential vice-presidential running mate for Trump, suggested that the attack was not an isolated incident and was a direct consequence of Biden’s election campaign rhetoric, which portrayed Trump as a dictator who needed to be stopped.

Despite differing views, many politicians agree that the attack represents a threat to democracy.
