The new prison to be built in Áir is undoubtedly the largest investment in future job creation in the Sundalag region, according to Jógvan Kruse, the mayor of Sunda municipality.
Nine municipalities competed to host the prison.
Danish authorities recommended three locations for the prison’s construction: Húsahagi in Tórshavn Municipality, Klovan in Sørvágur Municipality, and Áir in Sunda Municipality.
The new facility, set to be completed by 2029, will span 3,200 square meters. It will accommodate 36 inmates, provide 10 open spaces, 14 for remand detention, and 12 closed-off areas.
