In the lead-up to the 2024 Icelandic parliamentary elections, the lists for the South and Northwest constituencies of the Social Democratic Alliance have been unveiled. Arna Lára Jónsdóttir, the mayor of Ísafjörður and secretary of the Alliance, will head the party’s list in the Northwest, while Víðir Reynisson, the director of civil protection, will lead in the South.

In the South constituency, Ása Berglind Hjálmarsdóttir, a municipal council member from Ölfus and project manager at Harpa, is positioned second on the list, and Sverrir Bergmann, a council member in Reykjanesbær and a singer, is in third place. Honorary positions in the South will be held by Oddný G. Harðardóttir, a former leader of the Alliance and sitting MP, and Margrét Frímannsdóttir, a longtime spokesperson and MP for the party.

Oddný, who has served in parliament since 2009, recently announced her decision not to seek re-election after leading the South constituency since 2013.

In the Northwest, Hannes S. Jónsson, the executive director of the Icelandic Basketball Federation, occupies the second slot, and Jóhanna Ösp Einarsdóttir, a farmer and the leader of Reykhólahreppur, is third. Notably, Hannes had previously run for the Independence Party in 2014.

Arna Lára Jónsdóttir, positioned first on the Northwest list, has been the secretary of the Alliance since 2022 and is currently serving as the mayor of Ísafjörður. The honorary seat in this constituency will be filled by Guðjón S. Brjánsson, a former MP. The presentation of candidates marks an important step in the political landscape as the elections approach on November 30, 2024.
