Ilkka Sasi, the former deputy mayor of Tampere, has announced his resignation from the National Coalition Party’s regional council group. The decision was reached mutually between Sasi and Leena Kostiainen, the chairperson of the party’s Pirkanmaa regional council group. Following his departure, Sasi has established a new council group in the Pirkanmaa regional assembly named the Right-wing Pirkanmaa Council Group. He previously formed a similar group in the city council called the Right-wing Tampere Council Group.

Earlier this autumn, Sasi was expelled from the National Coalition Party’s group in the city council and was removed from his role as deputy mayor due to a loss of trust. In a joint statement, Sasi and Kostiainen indicated that, given the circumstances, it is best for their paths to diverge within the regional council as well.
