Children hospitalized after E.coli outbreak at Mánagarður preschool in Reykjavík
Two children are in critical condition in intensive care following an E.coli outbreak at the Mánagarður preschool in Reykjavík. Nearly thirty other children are under observation at the pediatric hospital. The principal of Mánagarður describes the outbreak as a devastating event, prompting a complete review of operational procedures.
Since the first diagnosis on Tuesday afternoon, 27 children have been treated for symptoms related to E.coli. Four of those are hospitalized, with two in serious condition in intensive care. Others remain home but are being closely monitored. Severe illnesses can develop several days after exposure, and in extreme cases, E.coli infection can lead to kidney failure.
The institution has reported infections across six of its seven departments. All meals served at the preschool are prepared on-site. Health surveillance has been investigating potential sources of the contamination, analyzing meat, fruits, and frozen vegetables used in meals.
The exact timeline for the preschool’s reopening remains uncertain. The entire facility will undergo disinfection tomorrow. The principal stated that there will be a thorough reassessment of all procedures, particularly in response to serious incidents like this.
Feelings of anger have surfaced among some parents, a reaction the principal understands given the severity of the situation. She emphasized the tremendous support they have received from the parent community during this challenging time.
