Man remanded in custody on suspicion of murdering mother in Breiðholt, Reykjavík
A man in his forties has been remanded in custody on suspicion of murdering his mother in Breiðholt, Reykjavík, last night. Authorities were called to a residence in Bökkunum at around midnight, where they found the woman deceased upon arrival. The man was subsequently arrested in connection with the incident.
To date, there have been eight homicides in seven murder cases this year in Iceland, marking a notable increase, according to criminologist Margrét Valdimarsdóttir. She expressed that such figures have not been observed previously in the country. “What we are witnessing this year and in recent years is more than just an increase in population. There seems to be something occurring within Icelandic society that is contributing to such severe violence,” she stated.
In other news, two kindergarten departments in Hveragerði have been closed due to an E.coli outbreak, with 27 children reported to be affected.
