Renowned musician Hans Rotmo passes away after battle with cancer in Verdal
The family of renowned musician Hans Rotmo has confirmed his passing after a long battle with cancer. Manager Ole Waage released a statement saying, “He passed away peacefully surrounded by his loved ones.” The family has requested privacy during this difficult time.
Hailing from Verdal, Rotmo had a prolific career spanning 60 years, establishing himself as a prominent musician, songwriter, playwright, and author. He first gained recognition in 1964 with the group Valley Boys and later became the leading figure in Heimevernslaget. In 1973, he founded Vømmøl Spellmannslag, which achieved great success in the 1970s with hits like “Førarkortet” and “Det er itjnå som kjem tå seg sjølv.” He also created the beloved character Ola Uteligger.
This year was supposed to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Vømmøl Spellemannslag with a planned tour. However, earlier this year, the tour was postponed due to Rotmo’s cancer diagnosis, which had resurfaced. In a 2020 interview, Rotmo acknowledged the uncertainty of cancer treatment, stating, “Even if you are declared free of the disease, you never have guarantees that it won’t return.”
His legacy continues to inspire many, and his contributions to Scandinavian music and culture will be fondly remembered.
