Roundabout redesign planned in Pori, Finland, following alarming accident statistics
Well-designed roundabouts are often effective solutions for problematic intersections, enhancing traffic safety and improving flow. However, special attention should be paid to ensuring that vehicle speeds entering and exiting the roundabout do not become excessive.
Pori, Finland, can rightfully be considered the city of roundabouts, boasting 45 of them, most of which have achieved their intended impact. Traffic flows are harmonized, and accident risks are reduced. Yet, not all roundabouts succeed in meeting these goals. A notable case is found in the city center, near Linnansilta and Paanakedonkatu, where a specific roundabout has alarmingly high accident statistics. Over the past decade, around 50 accidents have been reported to the police.
The underlying issues become apparent quickly during a typical weekday afternoon traffic observation. Many approaching vehicles maintain a strikingly high speed. “The roundabout is quite large, allowing for fast passage. In heavy traffic, drivers may attempt to squeeze into tight spaces, leading to collisions,” explains Eija Riihimäki, a traffic engineer from Pori.
It’s no surprise that this roundabout is listed for redesign in the city’s investment program. “The structure needs to be reshaped. For instance, narrowing the lanes could help reduce speed, and we also plan to update the roundabout’s connections,” Riihimäki adds.
Elias Ruutti from Traffic Safety emphasizes the role of well-designed roundabouts in lowering speeds in intersections, stating that if entering a roundabout can be done almost without slowing down, significant safety issues are likely to arise.
Despite some concerns, local residents generally find navigating roundabouts straightforward and efficient, with many advocating for even more to be constructed in the area.
