A new butterfly species has been named in honor of Icelandic artist Björk Gudmundsdóttir, known as Pterourus bjorkae. This butterfly primarily inhabits deciduous forests in the eastern part of North America.

Pterourus bjorkae belongs to the swallowtail family and is considered a subspecies of the New England tiger swallowtail. It is the largest subspecies, averaging about 8.5 centimeters in wingspan. The butterfly is characterized by its beautiful yellow coloration with dark patterns and orange spots. Its larvae resemble small snakes to deter predators, adding to the creature’s captivating nature. These butterflies are often seen in flower gardens and are renowned for their striking appearance.

The scientist Harry Pavulaan announced the naming of the species in a recent article published in a University of Nebraska journal. Pavulaan explained that the butterfly’s name honors Björk, recognizing her as a singer, composer, author, producer, music and fashion mogul, disc jockey, environmentalist, and personal influencer.

Björk’s influence on culture and the arts has earned her a place in scientific nomenclature, showcasing the intersection of nature and humanity. This naming serves as a celebration of her impact, further enriching the cultural tapestry of the region.
