A Tampere court has sentenced a man to a lengthy prison term for attempted murder that occurred in a restaurant over the summer. According to the court, the convicted individual aimed at the head or upper body of his target while attempting to fire a weapon and shouting threats. The incident took place in the morning of July 16 outside a restaurant in the Nekala area of Tampere. The accused denied the attempted murder charge.

During the proceedings, it was revealed that the weapon confiscated from the man was generally operational, but a malfunction known as a “feed error” occurred during the attempted firing. The court concluded that the man would have succeeded in his intent had he been able to rectify the malfunction, which ultimately prevented the weapon from being fired again.

A pistol-type firearm was seized by the police at the scene. The intended victim recorded the altercation, capturing video evidence of the convicted man shouting excitedly and aggressively while holding the weapon, which was presented as evidence in court.

In addition to the attempted murder charge, the man, identified as 23-year-old Rasmus Ilmari Olanterä, was convicted of several other offenses, including firearms violations and illegal threats. He received a total sentence of seven years and six months, which includes an additional two years and three months as a residual sentence from a previous conviction. He had been released on parole but committed the crimes about two months after his release.

Another accomplice involved in the offenses was also sentenced to two years and four months for crimes including burglary and robbery. The court’s decision can be appealed.
