Annual football tournament in Kópavogur draws thousands of young girls despite adverse weather conditions
The annual football tournament, held for the fortieth time in Kópavogur, attracted about three thousand girls from all over the country, despite the rain and wind. The competition is for girls from fifth to eighth grade, with most participants agreeing that they enjoyed the day’s matches.
Among the participants were Helga, Sara, Kristrún, Nanna, and Steina, who competed for Keflavík. Despite wishing for better weather, they enjoyed the camaraderie and fun of playing football. Similarly, Jóhanna, Berglind, Marín, Ásdís, Kristjana, Bríet, Aðalheiður, Sara, Ragnheiður, and Lovísa represented Fjölni and were quick to highlight the competition and friendship as the best parts of the tournament.
Representing Selfoss, Kara, Iðunn, Fanney, and Elena enjoyed competing in the rain and wind, with a good team spirit. When asked about their favourite female footballer, they unanimously answered “Sveindís Jane”.
Matthildur, Hrafntinna, Hanna, Auður, Berglind, and Aleksandra competed for FH and had a mixed tournament with both victories and losses. They look forward to the sun shining on the final day of the tournament to get out of their rain jackets. They enjoyed a pre-tournament party where they braided each other’s hair and ate pizza together, emphasising the excellent atmosphere of the event.
Svana, Úrsúla, Ísabella, and Bríet enjoyed playing in the rain in Kópavogur. They said, “This is the best football weather. It’s much more fun to compete in the rain than in the sun and wind.” They are hopeful that they will improve their performance on the final day of the tournament.
