Woman appeals three-year prison sentence for violence against former partners as case retried in Norway

Earlier this year, a woman was sentenced to three years in prison for violence, threats, and unlawful detention against four former female partners. The woman, who partially accepts her guilt, has appealed the ruling, and the case will be retried in the legal system.

Defense attorney Alexander Nyheim Jenssen argues that the woman should be acquitted because the instances she admitted to occurred several years ago and contends it was incorrect to classify the women as cohabitants. Police prosecutor Birgit Austad from the Southeast Police District stated she was not surprised that the case would go back to court. A central issue in the appeal will be the definition of cohabitation concerning three of the affected women.

The original court found the woman guilty under the criminal provision concerning violence in close relationships, which entails a harsher penalty than viewing the violence as isolated incidents. The Court of Appeals has allocated six days for the retrial, anticipated to occur in early 2025.

One of the former partners, who wishes to remain anonymous, expressed anxiety about the new court proceedings, stating it would be a heavy psychological burden and recalling fearing for her life in the past relationship.

The case was previously heard at the Drammen District Court in April 2024, where she faced charges from four ex-partners. The court concluded that three of them had lived together with the accused and were planning a future while sharing household expenses. The violence was described as “massive and intense,” highlighting the significant suffering endured by the women despite the relatively short duration of their relationships.
