Increase in competition on Norwegian marketplace Tise makes selling used items more challenging

Paolla da Silva, 30, has been buying and selling used items on Tise, a Norwegian marketplace, since 2017. However, she has noticed that it has become increasingly difficult to sell items due to a surge in competition. This is particularly noticeable in the clothing sector.

Tise has seen an impressive growth since its inception in 2016, with 1.5 million users in Norway alone. The number of users has increased by 20% in the past year alone, according to Victoria Hauk, marketing director at Tise.

Da Silva has noticed that the increase in users has made it more difficult to sell clothes. “It takes longer now. Before, if I posted a dress for sale, it would sell quickly. But then, there weren’t as many people doing it,” she says. She also notes that buyers have become more conscious of both price and quality, resulting in her having to sell items for less than before.

Ingun Grimstad Klepp, a professor at Oslo Metropolitan University who researches clothing habits and environmental impact, confirms that there has been an increase in the sale of used clothes in Norway. However, she points out that this doesn’t necessarily mean a reduction in the production of new clothes. Klepp suggests it’s better to buy used than new, but the best option is to use what one already has.

Da Silva agrees, stating that it’s easy to fall into the trap of both buying used and new items. Interestingly, Hauk reveals that as much as one in five items sold on Tise has not been used before being sold on the platform. Currently, Da Silva admits to buying more than she sells. “I think it’s a buyer’s market now,” she says.
