Major investment planned for synthetic methane facility in Pori, Finland
A major investment is set to take place in Pori if the plans proposed by Nordic Ren-Gas Oy come to fruition. The investment would involve a state-of-the-art facility for the production of synthetic methane, or e-methane, with a hydrogen capacity of 300 MW, amounting to over one billion euros. In a press release, Ren-Gas announced it has signed a reservation agreement with the city of Pori for a site in the Kirrinsanta industrial area. This project is slated to be the largest single investment in hydrogen technology in Finland.
The renewable e-methane produced at the facility is intended for use in heavy road transportation and European maritime shipping. Ren-Gas will immediately begin the environmental impact assessment of the project. The plant will utilize biogenic carbon dioxide captured from the Aittaluoto power plant, which will be transported by truck to Kirrinsanta for conversion into renewable fuel.
Additionally, waste heat generated by the production process will contribute to the district heating network of Pori. The project is expected to be completed by 2028, and it is estimated to create approximately 2,000 person-years of construction jobs and 50 permanent operational positions in Pori.
