Authorities investigating tram collision in Tampere, Finland

Authorities in Tampere, Finland, are investigating a collision involving two trams that occurred on Tuesday evening around 8:30 PM. The incident took place in the city center at the intersection of Hatanpään valtatie and Hämeenkatu.

The collision happened when a tram traveling from the railway station towards the central square turned towards Hatanpää after passing the Koskipuisto stop and collided with an oncoming tram. At the time of the accident, there were approximately 50 passengers aboard the trams, but fortunately, no injuries were reported. Both trams were moving at near walking speed, according to Vesa Rauhala, the operational chief at VR. He noted that one tram had just left the stop while the other was about to stop.

One of the trams sustained more severe damage during the collision and had to be towed away. The investigation into the cause of the incident is still underway, and VR is not providing detailed comments yet, as the inquiry will take several days.

Both trams were transported to the depot later that evening, and assessments of the damages were conducted during the day. Rauhala added that the tram that was hit suffered more significant injuries, while the other tram incurred only minor surface damage.

Traffic at the accident site was disrupted for several hours on Tuesday night.
