Landsvirkjun implements power restrictions for large consumers in northern and eastern regions of Iceland starting November 23

Landsvirkjun has announced that it will be implementing power restrictions for large consumers in the northern and eastern regions of Iceland starting November 23. This follows previously announced cuts for major users in the southwestern part of the country, effective from October 24.

The duration of these restrictions is uncertain but is expected to last until next spring. Landsvirkjun has also encouraged large consumers to reduce their energy demands and to explore options for reselling electricity as a means to alleviate pressure. These measures mirror actions taken earlier this year.

The driving factor behind these restrictions is the poor state of the reservoirs. The Þórisvatn reservoir is far from being filled and has seen a significant decline in levels. Additionally, the summer was both dry and cold in the highlands, with minimal glacier melt, while a continuous transfer of electricity from northern and eastern parts to the south has been ongoing to balance the reservoir conditions across regions.

It is important to note that the power restrictions will only affect those agreements that have been specifically identified as reducible when reservoir levels are low. Households and those with long-term contracts will not be impacted.
