President Alexander Stubb of Finland emphasized the urgent need to improve road, rail, and air connections in Northern Finland, citing the current geopolitical situation as a reason for immediate action. “We cannot afford to delay. I understand that infrastructure projects often progress slowly, but I believe the window of opportunity is in the coming years,” he remarked during a press conference in Oulu. Stubb noted that there is also interest in Finland’s infrastructure developments within NATO circles.

His visit to Northern Finland continues after Oulu with a ceremony for a bioproduct plant in Kemi. Prior to the press meeting, Stubb interacted with citizens at the Valkea shopping center, where he was asked about Finland’s internal security situation, particularly in relation to the stabbings that took place in the shopping center over the summer, allegedly involving individuals with foreign backgrounds.

“I have lived abroad for a long time, and whenever the topic of security in Finnish society arises, people are surprised by how good it is. However, we still face security challenges. The incidents at Valkea are tragic in many ways. We must learn to get along with one another,” Stubb stated, advocating for mutual respect regardless of each other’s backgrounds.

Stubb’s visit started with the inauguration of Oulu’s new university hospital, where he delivered a speech. He also participated in a public meeting attended by a large audience, and he was interviewed by youth representatives from the North Ostrobothnia welfare region, who inquired about his anticipation for hosting the Independence Day reception. Stubb expressed excitement about the preparations, highlighting that they begin early, even before Midsummer, and mentioned that this year’s reception would reflect unique perspectives from Northern Finland, which garnered applause from the audience.
