Danish King and Queen warmly welcomed in Flensburg during historic visit to Germany

The Danish King and Queen were warmly welcomed by a large crowd during their maiden visit as reigning monarchs to the streets of Flensburg today. The royal couple visited Flensborghus, home to many organizations representing the Danish minority in the region. The atmosphere was vibrant outside, with cheers and the waving of small Danish flags as spectators eagerly awaited their arrival.

Among those present was Janne Hendt, who stood with her daughter perched on her shoulders. “It shows that we matter when we receive such a visit. It’s something special, and my daughter has talked about it for days,” she said while waiting for the royals. Nearby, Antje Linde expressed her excitement with her grandchildren, stating, “I’m not a huge royalist but find it intriguing. Their visit alongside the state visit to Germany shows the royal family’s connection to South Schleswig.” Her oldest grandchild, Eleni Kruse, shared her anticipation, noting, “I believe this will be one of the best experiences of my life. I’ve always dreamed of seeing the Queen and King—beyond just the television.”

This visit marks the second time a Danish regent has attended to the Danish minority in Germany, the last being Queen Margrethe in September 2019. Historically, royal visits to this community have been rare; the first occurred in 1978, with Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik’s presence following a long absence.

After leaving Flensborghus, the couple connected with more fans on the streets of Flensburg, where excitement ran high. Their visit is part of a broader tour in Germany, having already visited Berlin and several locations in Schleswig-Holstein, including Dannevirke, emphasizing the importance of Danish minorities and the relationship between Denmark and Germany. Approximately 50,000 Germans reportedly identify with Denmark.
