Police conduct traffic enforcement operation in Uusimaa regions of Finland

During a focused traffic enforcement operation over the weekend in the Western and Eastern Uusimaa regions of Finland, police issued numerous fines and detected serious speeding violations. In Lohja, a 17-year-old driver, with a special permit, was clocked at 137 kilometers per hour on Lohjanharjuntie, exceeding the 80 kilometers per hour limit. In Nurmijärvi’s Klaukkala, another 17-year-old driver was recorded traveling at 118 kilometers per hour in a 50 kilometer per hour zone.

In Western Uusimaa, fines were imposed on 55 drivers, with 35 receiving traffic violation notices. Ultimately, 16 drivers were temporarily banned from driving after the weekend. In Eastern Uusimaa, police issued dozens of fines and traffic violation notices, with nearly twenty drivers facing temporary bans, some due to driving under the influence of alcohol or other substances.

The operation also led to the apprehension of wanted individuals and unlicensed drivers. In one instance, a police pursuit initiated on Kehä III ended with a spike strip deployment in Espoo.

From October 18 to 20, police across Finland conducted heightened surveillance of youth behavior on the roads, particularly focusing on speeding during the evening and nighttime on major roads, and also in urban areas during the day. Overall, 604 fines and 397 traffic violation notices were issued nationwide, including cases beyond just youth drivers. Notably, 47 cases of serious threats to traffic safety were recorded.

Among young drivers under 25, 87 received traffic violation notices, and 180 were fined for speeding. There are concerns surrounding youth involvement in traffic incidents, as their risk of fatality is reportedly three times higher than the general population, attributed to high speeds and the accompanying increased risk of accidents.
