The chairman of the Frískúlin school in Havn, Búgvi Dalsgarð, announced following a unanimous decision at an extraordinary general meeting last night that the school will be closed.
Frískúlin was established in August 2007 when Sharon Weiss and Eyðbjørg Dalsgaard received approval to begin operations. The school purchased the old kindergarten building in Velbastaður from the municipality of Tórshavn for 1.8 million kroner, starting with 20 children in grades one and two. After 17 years, this chapter is now coming to an end.
Dalsgarð stated that the relevant authorities have been informed of the decision made during the extraordinary meeting, marking the beginning of the process to close the school.
As an independent institution, Frískúlin’s statutes specify that any remaining assets after settling liabilities should be donated to arts-based youth work in Tórshavn municipality. Although classes were in session until the autumn break, the school is currently inactive.
Dalsgarð noted that support for the school has declined in recent years, and following announcements regarding its future, there has been a noticeable exodus of students, many of whom have now enrolled in other schools in Tórshavn municipality.
