New psychiatric care facility opens at Turku University Hospital in Finland
A new psychiatric care facility at the Turku University Hospital is set to transform mental health services in the city. Opening on Monday, the hospital will feature amenities such as sauna access and a gym for patients. Additionally, a sensory room has been constructed, designed specifically for relaxation.
In the sensory room, patients can immerse themselves in virtual nature experiences that transport them to the scenic landscapes of Southwest Finland, including the boardwalks of Mathildedal in Salo. Patients will also have access to calming activities such as massage chairs, balance boards, and vibrating stress balls. “The sensory room, or relaxation room, is intended to help patients step away from the hustle and bustle of the ward,” stated Pekka Makkonen, project manager of the facility.
The design process involved consultations with individuals who have experienced mental health care firsthand. Patients and various organizations provided input during the planning phase, and Makkonen, with extensive experience as a ward nurse at a psychiatric clinic, was appointed to lead the project. He emphasized the importance of patient dignity, mentioning a dedicated space in the lobby for patient organizations to meet individuals seeking help.
This modern facility aims to bring psychiatric care into the current century. Makkonen pointed out that while it serves as a hospital, it has been designed to ensure that it does not resemble a traditional clinical environment. “When Kompassisairaala is fully operational, it should seamlessly blend into the urban landscape,” he explained.
The hospital will initially accommodate patients from two wards across six floors, housing a total of 112 patient beds and employing 450 staff. The building project cost 76 million euros, drawing inspiration from best practices in Europe. The second phase of the facility, including a hospital school, is slated for completion in 2029 at an estimated cost of 87 million euros.
