The lure of mobile screens is undeniable with popular platforms like Fortnite, TikTok, YouTube, Minecraft, and Snapchat capturing children’s attention. However, experts are increasingly concerned about the potential consequences of excessive screen time for children. Mariagerfjord Municipality is addressing this issue by becoming the first in the country to initiate a certification program for all public schools, focusing on managing screen usage.
Helle Wolder, the program coordinator, emphasizes that each school must engage in discussions to develop local solutions. The certification will be facilitated by Dabeco, a company that provides education on healthy screen habits for teachers, students, and parents. Psychologist David Troutmann Madsen from Dabeco highlights that while technology can be beneficial, many platforms and games are designed to keep children and teenagers engaged longer than they intend or need.
As screen use among children has surged in recent years, Rune Lund Christensen, a teacher at Valsgård School, notes the importance of a balanced approach. He acknowledges that while gaming can foster social connections, there must be clear boundaries regarding screen time. Valsgård School has preemptively banned mobile phone use during school hours, a policy that students report works well.
Christensen hopes the certification process will lead to greater awareness among students about their screen habits and the effects on their mental health. Mariagerfjord is paving the way, with other municipalities like Rødovre, Slangerup, and Frederiksberg considering similar initiatives.
