Teachers’ Union meeting canceled as Labour Court rules on strike notice in Iceland

A scheduled meeting between the Icelandic Teachers’ Union and the Association of Icelandic Municipalities was canceled as the Labour Court must first rule on the legality of the union’s strike notice. Magnús Þór Jónsson, the union’s chairman, stated that progress is unlikely until a decision is reached by the Labour Court.

The Labour Court’s primary hearing began yesterday in response to the municipality’s complaint regarding the strike notice. Jónsson hopes for a ruling before the weekend, as the union has announced strikes in ten schools set to commence on Tuesday, October 29.

Jónsson noted that it is improbable discussions will resume until the Labour Court determines the legality of the strike. However, it ultimately falls to the state mediator to decide whether any further meetings will be arranged in the interim.
